Extension Services

 

The college promotes extension service to meet  community needs. Awareness programmes are regularly organized by the college to arouse social consciousness among students and to apply educational principles in dealing with social issues. The extension activities taken up by the college include social work, health & hygiene awareness campaigns, environmental awareness programmes, women empowerment activities, personality development and leadership training and various projects for the weaker sections of the society. The college gets support from voluntary association like Junior Chamber and Rotary Club to carry out these programmes.

Mushroom Culture

The Institution has been undertaking a project on Mushroom Culture in collaboration with Samagra Vikas Social Service Society. The target group of the project is the Dalit community living in and around Mannanam and adjoining Panchayats viz, Arpookkara, Neendoor, Kumaranallor and Athirampuzha. The project serves as an income generating programme. Mushroom culture is one of the most efficient and economically viable biotechnology process for the conversion of lignocellulose waste materials into high quality protein food. This project helps the poor to have a rich addition to the diet in the form of protein, carbohydrate, valuable salts and vitamins.

Vermi Culture

Another scheme taken up for community benefit is Vermi Culture which is an income generating cum biowaste management programme. There are 32 Self Help Groups (SHG) in the target area and an orientation class was conducted to enlighten members of these groups on the advantages of vermi culture and organic farming. From among them, 64 members (2 representatives from each SHG) have been selected for the training programme and eleven classes were conducted for this purpose.

One SHG was selected as the the model group in which the institution constructed a model vermi culture plant. Adequate number of earth worms were contributed to start such plants in other SHGs. In addition to these projects the college provides free vocational training (PGDCA, DCA) to the children of dalits parents who are members of the Samagra Vikas Social Project of the management. The college has adopted the nearby Nimala Balavadi (pre-school) and is supporting it financially. A seasaw costing Rs 9000 was donated to the Balavadi on 24-8-2007. Competitions were conducted for the kids on the same day. Many toys, story books, picture books, drawing books, and crayons were also gifted.

Support to the Mentally Challenged

Care is extended by the college to the mentally and physically challenged people. The college collaborates with 'Sneha Bhavan', a school for the mentally

challenged children. The teachers and students whole-heartedly participated in the Onam Rally which was organized by Snehabhavan. The institution purchase envelopes and greeting cards made by the inhabitants of Snehabhavan. We supply them with old news papers and raw materials for the production of paper bags and envelopes. Thus, the college provides physical and moral support for main-streaming and rehabilitating the mentally challenged.

Sanitation Programme

The institution undertakes public sanitation activities. A mosquito eradication programme was launched to control Chikun Gunia and Dengue fever, two fatal diseases spread by mosquitoes. Also, cleaning programmes are organized as a part of Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations.

Blood Donation forum

At the beginning of each academic year, the blood group of students are detected and a blood donation forum is formed. It serves as a big help for the patients of Government Medical College Hospital situated near the institution.
